The newly opened Western Sydney Airport may have stolen the aviation spotlight in Australia this year, but Perth has officially entered the chat. The West Coast’s biggest airport has unveiled concept designs for its huge new terminal, which is the centrepiece of a multi-billion-dollar “One Airport” transformation designed to consolidate flight services into one single precinct.

Spanning a mammoth 159,000 square metres, the game-changing new terminal will cover an area equivalent to nine AFL ovals – almost triple the size of Terminals 3 and 4, and 25 per cent larger than Terminals 1 and 2 combined.

Renowned Australian architectural firm Woods Bagot is bringing the “Big Sky/Deep Earth” vision to life, drawing inspiration from the relationship between the vast Western Australian sky and the ancient land of Whadjuk Noongar Country.

Beyond sheer scale, the new terminal will be more sophisticated in both looks and functionality. Among the 22 new contact gates are flexible “swing gates” that can switch between international and domestic operations to keep tarmac operations agile.

Inside, future passengers can expect streamlined automated check-in and bag drop, centralised security checkpoints and a smart call-to-gate system set to minimise gate queues. The design also features around 10,000sqm of new retail, dining and hospitality offerings, plus a playground, sensory and multi-faith rooms, a landscaped courtyard, and views to the airfield and Perth Hills

Perth Airport welcomed a record 18.4 million passengers in the financial year ending 2026, with annual traffic projected to more than double to 30.8 million by 2046. If all goes to plan, the One Airport transformation is scheduled for completion by 2031.

Western Australian Premier Roger Cook said Western Australians are looking forward to the next chapter for Perth Airport.

“This multi-billion-dollar investment further strengthens Perth’s position as Australia’s Western Gateway, an important role given that 95 per cent of visitors to the State arrive by air,” Cook said.
